Over the years I’ve tried a lot of things while trying to balance organization, security, weight, and functionality. I haveI have curated so I can pack fairly lightly while keeping secure and charged.
Always:
Luggage/Backpack: Osprey Farpoint 40L Men’s Travel Backpack – After issues rolling over rough ground, I switched from rolling luggage to a backpack. This pack has “backpacking” in its DNA, so it includes a lot of nice stabilizing features. The straps are easy to stow and unstow when converting it between a backpack and luggage. An Away backpack I tried was not nearly as stable or good at compressing the contents. The straps were much harder to stow
- Backpack: Osprey Farpoint Fairview Unisex Travel Daypack – while not the best for carrying a laptop, it integrates with the Farpoint 40L (and other Farpoint and Fairview backpacks)
- Rechargeable AAA batteries: Pownergy Li-ion AAA Batteries – while I haven’t found these to hold a charge as well as Eneloops, the convenience of not needing a dedicated charger (they charge over micro USB) wins out
- Flashlight: Streamlight MicroStream – I’m not sure why I always carry a flashlight, but the MicroStream runs on a single AAA battery and produces a nice bright light
- Trackers: Apple AirTags in Elevation Lab’s TagVault – Fortunately I haven’t had to track down my luggage, but it gives me peace of mind knowing I can locate a lost bag
Preparedness:
- Rain: Totes Titan Travel Umbrella and/or Disposable Rain Poncho
Hotel:
- Toiletry Kit: NOMATIC Small Toiletry Bag – Most toiletry bags are way to big for my needs. This is actually a fairly small bag
- Ear Plugs: Loop Quiet Ear Plugs – These are comfortable and make noisy hotels bearable
Tech:
- Security Key: YubiKey 5ci – second factor with USB-C and Lightning connectors for Bitwarden, Google, and Apple
- Mouse: Logitech MX Anywhere 2 – wireless mouse that recharges over USB. Many years later, this is still my favorite mouse due to its small size, hyper-scroll, USB & Bluetooth connectivity, and horizontal scrolling
- Travel Router: HooToo TripMate Nano – I use a travel router so I only have a single device connected to hotel networks and so I can connect devices that don’t have web browsers
- Surge Protector: Belkin 3-Outlet SurgePlus – I don’t like how bulky this is; however, the swivel plug is a helpful often enough
- Surge Protector: CyberPower 3-Outlets Surge Suppressor – foldable plugs and much more compact than the Belkin suppressor, this doesn’t provide much power to the USB plugs and won’t work with all outlet locations
- USB Power adapter: Anker 2-Port 24W USB Wall Charger PowerPort 2 – for those devices that require higher power output
- Charging Cable: AmazonBasics Nylon Braided USB A to Lightning Cable – I love the nylon cover and the heavy duty rubber stress relievers
- Flash Drive: Kanguru 8GB FlashBlu30 – if you have to print at a hotel, print a PDF to this drive, lock it, and then print the PDF from the hotel computer
Rental Car:
- Car Power Adapter: Anker 24W Dual USB Car Charger, PowerDrive 2 – keep my phone charged without relying on a rental car USB port
- Cell Phone Mount: Air Vent Cell Phone Mount – something compact that will attach to almost any car
Plane:
- USB Battery: Anker PowerCore+ mini, 3350mAh – compact battery for emergency charges
Personal Care:
- Razor: Harry’s Truman – simple inexpensive razor with a nice compact travel cover
- Shaving Cream: 3.4oz (100ml) Harry’s Shave Cream – TSA friendly size
- Toothbrush: Quip – compact electric toothbrush with a built in travel case
or
Colgate Travel Toothbrush – foldable manual toothbrush with a solid feel. The brush head is a little larger than the average toothbrush
International:
- Hotspot: ZTE Z915 with T-Mobile SIM Starter Kit – allows automatic international roaming
- World power adapter: elago Tripshell Travel Adapter with dual USB
- RFID Blocking Pouch: Fintie Passport Holder – attractive RFID blocking passport holder
